What's Jewish about protecting the environment?

This Sunday at 2 p.m. our YLD Cares! Social Action Committee has organized a St. Johns River Cleanup Project in conjunction with St. Johns Riverkeeper. I urge everyone to attend because it's a hands-on way to make a difference in the community, and in a Jewish way! The Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life is also a partner. The coalition seeks to expand the contemporary understanding of Jewish values as tikkun olam (perfecting the world) and tzedek (justice) to include the protection of people and other species from environmental degradation. The coalition seeks to extend such traditions as social action and g'milut hasadim (performing deeds of loving kindness) to environmental action and advocacy.
