Ben Yakir Youth Village

Shabbat Shalom!

In each of these messages to our family of donors, we highlight agencies and programs funded with dollars from our annual campaign. And we provide whenever possible a story coming from the voice of recipients of these important programs.

Our board recently approved funding for several programs of the Jewish Agency for Israel, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and World Ort. These include invaluable financial support for Jewish seniors living in the former Soviet Union (JDC), and the dollars we allocate to the Ben Yakir Youth Village in our Israel Partnership community in Hadera.

The JDC is literally keeping alive 160,000 seniors throughout the former Soviet Union. Without the care they receive in food and medicine that supplements their meager pensions, they would not survive.

At the Jewish Agency’s Ben Yakir Youth Villiage, teen boys are given a last chance to make it. Many of these young boys have come from poverty stricken families, often from broken homes. If they do not learn how to function in Israeli society, they will not graduate high school, not be able to get into the army, or worse – go to jail. The boarding school is working. The results show that graduates of Ben Yakir are matriculating (passing their high school exams) at the same level as teens in regular schools. It is a major success story.

Our campaign dollars provide significant funding of these two overseas programs. Without your support, we would not be able to make such a difference in the lives of these young and senior fellow Jews.
